Robert Pattinson has starred in several types of movies since his acting career began in 2004, and over the past five years or so he’s played notably complicated, brooding characters in films like The Batman and reached an especially memorable level of disturbing in his performance as Reverend Preston Teagardin in The Devil All the Time.

So one might go ahead and assume that Pattinson, who seems to lean in to the dark much more than the light when selecting roles, wouldn’t have much of a problem simply watching movies.

But there is one genre in particular that the 38-year-old actor can no longer watch. He explains below:

“I used to watch a lot of dark stuff when I was younger,” said Pattison. “And think ‘yeah, this is cool’. And now, I’m too sensitive. It’s strange, you’d think it would go the other way round. As you get older, you become less frightened of these [films]. I can’t watch horror movies anymore.”

That stand-alone quote is relatively surprising all by itself, but it managed to run much deeper and get more descriptive from there:

“I did get very frightened [recently],” Pattinson explained. “I had to do a meeting with the director, and he’d done this horror movie, and I watched it, and I kept thinking that someone was breaking into my house. And so I was sitting on my sofa with two kitchen knives waiting for the person to come in. And then I fell asleep with them basically in my neck on the couch. It was probably a squirrel.”

Now, there’s “scared of horror movies”—a feeling shared by lots of moviegoers—and then there’s “preparing for a possible home invasion while holding two knives” scared of horror movies, which creates quite the visual for those familiar with Pattinson’s more intense acting performances.

Up next for Pattison is Mickey 17, where he stars as Mickey Barnes, “an expendable” that goes on a journey to colonize an ice planet.

This one officially falls under the category of dark comedy and, maybe for the best, does not appear to involve any elements of horror.

The film is set for theatrical release on Friday, March 7.
